Remix IDE

TL;DR: Browser-hosted Solidity IDE with compiler, JS-VM sandbox, on-the-fly debugger and one-click MetaMask deploy — the fastest way to throw a PoC contract at a testnet or to step through opcodes interactively.

What it is

Remix is a web-based IDE for EVM development that bundles a Solidity/Vyper compiler, a deterministic in-browser EVM (“Remix VM”), a transaction debugger that single-steps opcodes with stack/memory/storage inspection, and a deploy panel that talks to MetaMask, an RPC URL, or its own sandbox. There’s a desktop build (Remix Desktop / Remix-IDE Electron) and a CLI companion (remixd) for syncing a local folder into the web IDE.

Preconditions / where it applies

  • Quick PoC for a CTF challenge or write-up — no toolchain install
  • Stepping through an opcode-level trace to understand a revert or a delegatecall hijack
  • Interacting with a deployed contract through the “At Address” panel using only its ABI
  • Teaching / demoing — the visual storage and stack panels are useful for explaining EVM mechanics

Technique

Compile + deploy in the sandbox.

  1. Open https://remix.ethereum.org.
  2. Drop your .sol into the contracts/ folder. Pick the matching compiler (0.8.x) in the Solidity Compiler tab.
  3. In Deploy tab pick environment Remix VM (Cancun) for a local sandbox, or Injected Provider — MetaMask to deploy to a real chain.
  4. Hit Deploy. The contract appears under “Deployed Contracts” with buttons for every external function — type args, send tx, watch logs.

Debug a transaction. After a tx, hit the Debug button on its receipt. You get:

  • Step-over / step-into opcodes
  • Stack, memory, storage, calldata panels
  • Source-line mapping when the source is loaded
  • A “step back” capability — invaluable when chasing a revert reason

Connect to mainnet read-only. Set environment to WalletConnect or Custom — External HTTP Provider and point at an Infura / Alchemy RPC. Use At Address with the verified ABI from Etherscan to call view functions without spending gas.

remixd sync. Run npx @remix-project/remixd -s ./my-project --remix-ide https://remix.ethereum.org to expose a local folder; the IDE picks it up under localhost. Useful when you want git + Remix’s debugger together without the Foundry test loop.

Plugins. Slither, Solhint, MythX, “Flattener” and the Etherscan-verify plugin all run in the IDE. The unit-test plugin runs *_test.sol files in the VM with assertEq / assertTrue.

Detection and defence

Not a defensive tool — it’s the attacker’s notebook. For defenders the relevant points are:

  • A contract verified on Etherscan can be loaded directly into Remix by anyone for cheap auditing; assume your bytecode is read.
  • Remix’s storage panel makes it trivial to spot accidentally-public secrets or initial admin keys committed into constructor calldata.
